Description:

Sign the online petition calling for a Proclamation for the observance of the International Day of Peace, September 21, each year. The petitions will be delivered to the offices of Governor Blagojevich and Senators Durbin and Obama on September 21, 2006. We will continue collecting signatures after September 21st so that we will have a head start on next year.

The International Day of Peace was established through a unanimous resolution by the UN General Assembly as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, on a fixed date, September 21, each year beginning in 2002, because of the vision and work of one person, Jeremy Gilley of Peace One Day www.peaceoneday.org. It had, since 1982, been observed on the opening day of the UN General Assembly, a variable date, which caused much confusion, and few people knew about it. It also had not asked for a 24-hour ceasefire. More Information: www.internationaldayofpeace.org www.un.org/events/peaceday/2005/
We are being joined simultaneously in this petition drive by networks using ICJPE's Actions Options Tool programming in the states of Florida and Minnesota!

Proclamation
WHEREAS: We are living in a world of nations whose interdependence makes unity and respect for diversity a priority for the survival and advancement of our civilization; and

WHEREAS: The issue of peace embraces the deepest hopes of all peoples and remains humanity's guiding inspiration; and

WHEREAS: In 1981 the United Nations proclaimed the International Day of Peace be "devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples"; and

WHEREAS: The United Nations expanded the observance of the International Day of Peace in 2001 to include the call for a global ceasefire and non-violence, and invited all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day; and

WHEREAS: There is growing support within our state for the observance of the International Day of Peace, which affirms a vision of our world at peace, and fosters cooperation between individuals, organizations and nations; and

WHEREAS: Global crises impel all citizens to work toward converting humanity's noblest aspirations for world peace into a practical reality for future generations;

We, the undersigned citizens of the State of Illinois, do hereby request that the International Day of Peace, September 21, be officially proclaimed a State and National Observance each year. As a day of Global Ceasefire and Nonviolence, it could make significant contributions to saving lives and promoting Peace if it is widely observed.

As an additional part of this action, we have created a print version of the petition which you can customize and use to approach your Illinois towns, villages and cities.

Co-sponsors are welcome and will be listed on the printed petitions.

If you'd like to participate in one of this year's petition deliveries to Governor Blagojevich and Senators Durbin and Obama, please send an email to marcia@nscpj.org. Someone will get back to you as quickly as possible.

Press advisories will be emailed and faxed to the media supporting the deliveries. Watch this page for additional support materials and updates on this action. Visit our Forum for additional information. Proceed to (link) for full text of the Proclamation which can also be used as the basis of a legislative resolution. The Proclamation can be adapted for any level of government.
